Apologies to my fellow Singaporeans who are interested in SEO for the long awaited update :) But anyways, here it is. This time round, I will be explaining more about on page optimization.
Checklist for Search Engine Optimized Content
How To Write Search Engine Optimized Content
In my few posts in this Singapore SEO blog regarding on page optimization so far, I've basically dealt with the inner aspects of on page optimization. Herein, I'm going to talk in response to your process of writing your posts.
You might think, what else is there besides knowing how to write search engine optimized content and also having that checklist for search engine optimized content? There is lots more.
In this specific post, I'll be explaining about the "BOLD" term.
In blogger/blogspot, if you have written your posts, you then highlight your keywords with the "b" button at the top there. Its perfectly fine.
For your Singaporean/International readers that is. NOT FOR SEARCH ENGINE CRAWLERS. Why?
You see, Blogger is OWNED by Google. So knowing that, Google does not want people to spam their keywords with bold which would make indexing a blog post irrelevant. Thus, it made the "b" tool above, to give the following html code when clicked :< style="font-weight: bold;">< /span >
What that piece of code does is yes, it makes your keywords bold and highlighted but only for the pleasure of your readers. It makes no sense whatsoever to the search engine crawlers.
So what do you do? You put the following tag instead(without the spaces of course) :< strong > < /strong >
This tag would automatically bold the word, at the same time, telling the search engine crawlers that the highlighted word is of importance. THAT, would actually make your bolded keywords count. ;)
So if you've been using Blogger/Blogspot and just blindly using that "b" button above, take the time and go to "Edit Html" and copy paste the < strong > < /strong > tags for your keywords.
For those using Wordpress, you need not worry because Wordpress comes SEO ready right out of the box, and using the "b" button there actually puts the < strong> < /strong > tags automatically for you.
This might be an old piece of information but Im not particularly sure if my fellow Singaporeans have gotten the geist of it. If you havent, then here you go ;)
Use this new piece of information and my other posts mentioned above to optimize your post. That is what people call on page optimization.
There will be one more post regarding on page optimization for Singaporeans that will mainly touch on how to effectively write a post to contain all the keywords you want to rank high for a search term :)
If you have any queries, feel free to drop me an email me. I dont bite :) And by the way, I'm currently ranked top 5 for SEO Singapore Consultant and Singapore SEO Consultant :D

PageRank and Ranking High in the SERPs
Well, I hope that you guys learnt a great deal from my previous post that was a very simplified version of understanding PageRank. Really, it couldnt get any simple than that. :) So anyways, in this post, I'm going to touch on PageRank in more detail. How PageRank and Links are related and how to use it to your advantage when optimizing your site/page. Hope you are ready for this SEO explaination ;)
Anchor Text
Ok for the benefit of those not in the know, I shall explain this term "Anchor Text". Its very important to know what it means because I will be mentioning it in the coming paragraphs.
So what is anchor text?
Anchor text is basically the text that you use for a link. For example, for the following link :
Young Talented Good Looking SEO Consultant from Singapore
the anchor text in this case is simply "Young Talented Good Looking SEO Consultant from Singapore" while " http://seo-singapore-consultant.blogspot.com/ " is the link that it points to.
That really can't get any easier to understand so if you don't, go hire an seo consultant and standby shitloads of money because you're probably gonna get cheated anyway. :p
Another term that I would be using is "Keyword Authority".
What is Keyword Authority?
Its basically ranking high/having authority (remember my post about links? If not, go read : Search Engines and Links ) for a certain keyword. For example, if your site is about hiring an seo consultant, you rank high for that keyword, and you have links to you from related pages with high PR containing "hiring an seo consultant" as the anchor text or any of its variation, you're said to have Keyword Authority for the keyword "hiring an seo consultant".
That should be simple enough. Still with me?
Good.
Anyway, moving on.. So how are PageRank, Links, Keyword Authority and Anchor Text related to each other?
They all contribute in ranking your page for a certain keyword. How?
LINKS with the ANCHOR TEXT of your keyword, coming from pages with high PAGERANK that are related to your keyword, would give you KEYWORD AUTHORITY for your keyword.
So basically, like I said in my previous post, you might have a PR 10 for all I care, but if the links back to your site contain mostly your name as the anchor text, you're only going to have keyword authority for your name, and not what your website is about.
Now do you understand why I emphasise that PageRank is simply not everything about Google?
Like I said in my previous post, it is the measure of a webpage's popularity on the web, by counting how many links are pointing to it.
BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT,
In order to have KEYWORD AUTHORITY for a certain keyword, then the links back to your site should contain your keyword in the anchor text, and better, variations of it scattered among the links.
That's simply it :D
Summary
Garnering links with anchor text containing variations of your keyword would increase your PageRank as well as your keyword authority, and this can help you rank higher in the SERPs.
And that is what you, me and everyone else wants :D
PS : Be Forewarned though, that because of the complexity of the calculation of PageRank, its not always easy to gain keyword authority for a certain keyword. And also, your on site optimization (your content, coding etc etc) still play a part. ;)
Email or comment if you have any queries!

PageRank Information Among Singaporeans
First up, I stumbled upon this site that has blogs of thousands of people. I'm assuming they're at least from Singapore if not Malaysia. What's important is, they're from somewhere near me, and sadly enough, the information that they have regarding PageRank is horrendous. I am going to explain in the simplest terms possible what PageRank means or is for.
What is PageRank?
The article regarding PageRank should give you some idea. But for the benefit of those who just can't understand or are too lazy to click on the link, here is my explaination in simplest of terms.
PageRank is an algorithm.
What is an algorithm?
It is a set of methods that one uses for a solution to a problem.
The problem in this case is "the relevancy of results of search queries on search engines is very bad".
The algorithm to solve this problem?
PageRank, developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
<PageRank is basically giving a ranking to a certain webpage depending on the number of votes to it.
Read up "Search Engines And Links" to get a clearer idea on what links mean on the web. I mean it. Its important if you're to understand what is going on.
Anyway, so Votes in this case simply refers to links.
A simple analogy to real life : If many people talk about something, that thing has to be good doesnt it? When people talk about something, its referred to as a vote. Which in turn is referred to as a link.
So in layman terms, PageRank is the ranking given to a certain webpage with regards to the amount of links it has connected to it.
So therefore, to answer the question of what PageRank is in simple terms :
The more links to a webpage, the higher its PageRank.
PS : (Of course, the calculation of PageRank is alot more complicated than that. But I'm trying to keep things simple here.)
So you already know what PageRank is. Now I'm going to tell you what PageRank is NOT.
What PageRank is NOT
PageRank is not the ranking given to a webpage with regards to search queries. For example, a website with a PageRank of 8 might not be anywhere in the first or second pages of a certain term. Why? Because the links that are pointing to it are a lot, but come from a lot of sites that are not relevant to the webpage with a PR of 8.
It makes much sense to note now, that if a page has a lot of links, it would get a high PR. But to get a high PR as well as rank high on the SERPs, a webpage has to garner alot of RELEVANT LINKS.
What do I mean by relevant links?
If your webpage is regarding "Cats", dont go to a "Dog" webpage and get a link with the anchor text, "Dogs" pointing to your page. Gaining a high PageRank it will do, but placing your webpage high in the SERPs for the term "Cats" it will not.
Get what I'm saying now?
I would not deny that having links pointing to your site is important in Search Engine Optimization but from what I've read on Singaporean blogs, the idea is that PageRank is the all important factor that determines your ranking on the SERPs. Which it is definitely not.
I will repeat this one last time.
PageRank is the measure of how popular a webpage is on the web. Through counting the amount of valid links (non-paid) to it.
PageRank is NOT the measure of your ranking on the SERPs.
That is basically the simplest form of PageRank I can provide for beginners. If you still have doubts or queries, dont be afraid to leave a comment or email.
I will talk about how to increase your PageRank AS WELL as your rankings on the SERPs in the future posts.
Read the post before this to understand how its possible to rank high on the SERPs without having any PageRank at all. ;) Hope that this post helps fellow Singaporeans to understand PageRank.
Till then,

Week 1 Update
I will be writing weekly updates on the progress of this blog. If you still have not known yet, I am trying to prove that it is indeed possible to rank high for a search term using only free tools and of course, some efforts on your part.
Aim : To get #1 spot for the terms "SEO Singapore", "Singapore SEO" and "Singapore SEO Consultant".
When I started this blog, I have no clue at all regarding the competition I'd face as my keyword researching proved to be futile due to Singapore being a very small populated country, there isnt enough keyword searches to aid in my optimizing my content for the keywords that I want.
Therefore, I typed in the terms "SEO Singapore" and started looking through each of my competitors' sites, viewing their source code and tried to figure out what my long tail keywords that I can use.
My short term aim was to get this blog indexed as quickly as possible so that I can focus on link building and optimizing my content after that. Well, I did achieve that.
Search Engine Indexing Progress
As of now, my 7 articles on Search Engine Optimization, SEO and SEO Singapore have been fully indexed on Google and I can focus on the other parts of Search Engine Optimization now.
It wasnt without help that I got my articles indexed relatively quickly with respect to the creation date of this blog. (Which was early in 2008 by the way)
I got a boost from the following sites : Digg , StumbleUpon and BloggingZoom. These sites gave me the link authority needed to boost my pages up the SERPs for the keywords that I was aiming for.
Search Engine Results Pages Progress
These are the rankings I am currently at for the following terms :
- SEO Singapore
- Blogging Zoom : Similarity Between Search Engines Article RANKED 30
- Blogging Zoom : Search Engine Optimized Content RANKED 36
- Home Page of SEO Singapore RANKED 47 - SEO Singapore Consultant
- CheckList for Search Engine Optimized Content RANKED 10 - Blogging Zoom : Truth About SEO RANKED 19
- How to Rank Number 1 On Search Engines RANKED 25
- Blogging Zoom : Search Engine Optimized Content RANKED 34
- DIGG : Importance of On Page Optimization RANKED 41
- Singapore SEO
- Home of Page Singapore SEO RANKED 101
- Singapore SEO Consultant
- How To Rank Number 1 On Search Engines RANKED 21
At this point of time, the only links back to this site are from Digg, StumbleUpon and BloggingZoom. So in a way, I have not really started on my link building campaign yet. Hope everything goes well in the next few weeks.
PS : If any of you would like to help, then you can help with a link back to this blog using one of the terms above. Drop me a note and I'm sure to love you :D

How To Write Search Engine Optimized Content
Contrary to popular belief, it is infact not that difficult to write content and get it to be optimized for search engines as well. In fact, it will only take but a couple of steps. Here's how to write SEO optimized content :
- Write your content as per normal, making it readable for readers/visitors
- Get your long tail keyword ready
- Substitute relevant keywords at certain points for your long tail keyword
- Use the SEO Checklist and if you have not done all of it yet, go back to step one
Four main steps should'nt be too difficult, right? Doesnt really matter if it is :p You still HAVE to do it. Anyway, I'll now get into details about how to go about each step.
Step 1 :
No one can stress enough the importance of making your content readable for your readers. Not only does it have to be readable, it has to be easy to understand for your target audience as well.
So all makes sense in this first step that you write your content as per normal, sales pitch or not, proffesional tone or otherwise, or just a piece of information. Make sure when YOU, or your close buds read it, they get the desired effect that you want out of it.
I wouldnt be teaching copywriting techniques and stuff but in general, remember this first step is :
Write your content how you want it to affect your readers, visitors.
Step 2 :
You should already have figured out what your Main, Sub Main, and Long Tail Keywords are.
If you have not, read this checklist for search engine optmization as it briefly explains what are each of those terms that I just mentioned.
But anyway, for those who already know, get your long tail keyword, or keywords ready in a separate text file.
I am assuming at this point that you have not done ANYTHING at all to your original content and that it should make PERFECT sense to readers/visitors.
Thus this step is :
Get your Long Tail Keyword or Keywords ready.
Step 3 :
In my checklist for Search engine optimized content, I have set up a list of advisable points in your content that there be a "keyword" be it your main keyword or otherwise.
Now subsitute in those places that have none of your keywords yet, your keywords. Make sure you tweak them so that it makes sense in that place. Try to use more of your long tail keywords (different variations of course) rather then your main keywords in your passage/content so that you can get ranked higher for those long tail keywords first.
Benefits of tweaking your keyword every time you use them :
- Different Variations
- More Believable to the Search Engines that your Content is Genuine
- Higher Ranking for the Keyword that you're Targetting for
- Ranked Higher for More Keywords as there are Variations
- Most Important of all, It Makes Perfect Sense to Readers
That's basically the important step in these stages, which is to subsitute your keywords at relevant points, at the same time, using different variations so that they make sense at those points.
Step 4 :
This has to be the easiest step and I dont think I need even explain. Nevertheless, counter check your efforts with the SEO Checklist and make sure you've done all the 5 steps explained in that checklist.
It isnt difficult at all and you can get it done and over with in 5 minutes for an estimated 700 page passage.
And that is all there is to it! One thing I'd like to stress on, is to optimize your content for the Search Engines so that you'll get ranking for the keyword that you want. In the upcoming posts, I'll explain why its so important to optimize your content for the search engines.

Checklist for Search Engine Optimized Content
From my previous post regarding Search Engine Optimized Content, I've left you hanging with how to determine if a post is balanced in its optimization. Well, I am going to describe about what makes a passage optimized for search engines first.
A Search Engine Optimized Passage
So what makes a passage optimized just enough for the Search Engines? Here's a checklist for you :
- Optimized Header Titles (H1 and H2 Tags)
- Optimized Main Keyword
- Optimized Sub Main Keyword
- Optimized Long Tail Keyword
- Links to Authority sites
Optimized Header Titles would mean it carries the keyword that you're targetting for that passage. For example, if you were targetting "SEO Singapore" as a keyword, then you'd want to name your passage "A Good SEO Singapore Consultant". Include your LONG TAIL keyword in the title of the passage and at the same time, try to keep the number of words to a minimum. Don't go naming your passage, "The Best SEO Singapore Consultant and also in Malaysia who provides cheap SEO services" in context to the example above.
Include your Main Keyword at least once in the first paragraph of your passage. What's your Main Keyword you ask? It is the main keyword that you're optimizing your site for. If possible try to squezee in your main keyword at least once in 3 paragraphs of your passage. Not to forget, one more at the end of the passage.
Your Sub Main Keyword is the the keyword next to the main keyword you're targetting. For example, if your main keyword is "SEO Singapore" than you'd want to target "Singapore SEO Consultant" as your Sub Main Keyword.
Now, squezee in your sub main keyword roughly around once in every 2 passages as long as its in context.
Include your long tail keyword in EVERY paragraph of your passage. If possible at either the end or the beginning of the paragraph. If for example, your sub main keyword or main keyword is at the start of the paragraph, then place your long tail keyword at the end.
What's a long tail keyword you ask? Well, in reference to the above example with "SEO Singapore" being the Main Keyword, "Singapore SEO Consultant" being the Sub Main Keyword, then an example of a long tail keyword would be "Optimizing your Singapore site for Search Engines" or "List of Singapore SEO Consultants".
It is very important to include AT LEAST 2 links to authority sites in every passage of your site.
Why? Well, by linking to an authority site, you've completed the first step in showing to Google that you're a trusted site and not just any spam sites.
To know more of what are authority sites, read up Search Engine Optimization and Links. But in general, a Wikipedia search on your niche subject and linking to it would be good. For example, since my site is targetting SEO Singapore and the only available subjec on Wikipedia is SEO, hence including it as a link : Search Engine Optimization.
Of course, this linking part is only the first of many steps needed to rank your site well in Search Engine Results Pages.
Use the checklist above and start to implement which you have not implemented. I will explain more on how to use the bold and strong tags and also, tips on how to write search engine optimized content with ease.

Search Engine Optimized Content
Optimizing your content for the Search Engines is what people call on page optimization. I'll get to the off page optimization on another post. But nevertheless, here's what optimizing your content for search engines is all about.
Optimized Search Engine Content
Search Engines love content. They love it more when content is updated and fresh. Why? Because content helps them to deliver to their users what their users need. Though Google is currently ahead in technology because it is beginning to be able to understand content, some people around the world might not be as smart as the Googlebot (hey, you never know!) and would not understand parts of a certain article.
Some other search engines might even have trouble understanding a passage and would have to rely on keyword density (the number of times a certain word appears in a passage over the total number of words of that passage) to index that page in their search engine accordingly.
Nevertheless, it is very important to optimize your content before submitting it to search engines or having them crawl and index it the way you want it. Why? Because that's what SEO is all about! You'd want these spiders or bots, to crawl and index your page the way you want it. To index your page for a certain keyword that you want. So that your whole site benefits by appearing in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) for the keyword or keywords that you're targetting.
However at the same time, you must not forget your visitors or readers! Some people optimize their content to the extent that it does not make sense for humans. Others, optimize their content for their readers and visitors but make it hard for the Search Engine crawlers to understand them.
Summary , Benefits of Optimizing your Content for Search Engines
- Higher ranking in the SERPs
- Better readability for both humans and search engine crawlers
- It is very important to not over optimize your site
- Gain a optimizing balance of your content where its both good for readers as well as search engine crawlers
Therefore, it is very important that a passage is balancely optimize for the readers and visitors, AS WELL AS the Search Engine crawlers.
I can see some question marks starting to appear on top of your heads. How do you determine if a passage is well optimized for readers as well as for Search Engine Crawlers?
That my friends, would go to another post on Search Engine Optimization. ;)

Search Engines and Links
I know how people must be itching to get their hands dirty and start on Search Engine Optimization. So without further ado, here's some important information that you have to embed into your heart.
Similarity between the Major Search Engines
There is but one main similarity that lies among the major search engines (namely Google, Yahoo! and MSN Live) and it has been the core root of what the internet or "the web" is all about.
So what is it?
The essence of the internet, LINKS.
I do not wish to explain what links are but just for the benefit of those not in the know here's a good site to read up on links (or hyperlinks) : Hyperlinks.
Links interconnect one site with another and that site with another till it forms a whole loop, or a web as what we call the internet today. They've been around since the start of the internet and take note of this next sentence :
LINKS ARE GOING TO STAY AS A CRITERIA IN THE RANKING OF IMPORTANCE, IN THE SEARCH ENGINES IN TIME TO COME.
That sentence above is probably the only one you'd need to read in this post but nevertheless I'll provide you with further details.
Google uses the links to a webpage as a criteria in ranking that page in the SERPs.
Yahoo uses links to a website as a criteria in ranking that site in the SERPs.
MSN Live uses links to a website as a criteria in ranking that site in the SERPs.
Those sentences alone are enough to tell you how important links, or hyperlinks are in Search Engine Optimization.
SEO Myth of Links/Hyperlinks
As a Singapore SEO Consultant, I am very much obliged to tell you about the myths currently spreading out on the web regarding Search Engine Optimization. One popular myth is this :
A Large Amount of Links Pointing to Your Site From Anywhere is Going to Increase your Ranking.
Wait, I am wrong about that. There are in fact 2 myths in that!
- A Large Amount of Links Pointing to Your Site
- Links Pointing to Your Site From Anywhere
For the easiest of understanding, I am going to use an analogy for links.
Link Analogy of this Singapore SEO Consultant
Search Engines treat links as "trust sources". They want to rank a certain page high in the SERPs if that webpage has lots of trusted sources linking to it.
Let's take for example you're selling Computer Software. (Your website / webpage)
Do you think your customers ( visitors to your site ) are more willing to buy from you if :
- Bill Gates and Steve Jobs gave a say that your software is good and recommended
- Your local computer store endorses your software and recommends it to their customers
- Your relative told her friends that your software is good and recommends it
- A Classified Advertisement regarding your software shows : "Best Computer Software Buy Now!"
Its common sense that your customers are more likely to buy your product if the above happens in order from 1 to 4. That is what links are basically about! As simple as that. I'll explain in more detail.
- Bill Gates & Steve Jobs are the equivalent of "Authority Sites" in your niche and what they say (Links) have a very high weightage. These authority sites differ between search engines but a similarity is that Wikipedia and Dmoz are good authority sites for any of your niches.
- Your local computer store is equivalent to another site that is related to your niche and when they recommend it their customers (Links), their recommendation is of much weightage as they know what they're talking about and when they recommend something (links), there is a likelihood that it is a good recommendation.
- Your friends are equivalent to the other sites on the web linking to your and recommending your product. They MAY or MAY NOT know what they're talking about so the search engines cannot really place much importance on them.
- The Classified Ads are equivalent to the spam sites (websites that do not help the user, no relevant content, no useful solution) and when since they are a dubious source, what they recommend (link) has a high likelihood that it is not as useful as described in the ad.
From the last part above, it is the emergence of spam sites that has caused search engines to need trusting sources to link to a new site to ensure that it is indeed a "trustworthy" source as well.
That is basically what links are all about in Search Engines and Search Engine Optimization. Understand this is of utmost importance because its the core basic of Search Engine Optimization and you need this if you're going to understand the more in-depth terms later in this Singapore SEO blog.
Hope you understood the lesson,
Till then,

Truth about SEO
Search Engine Optimization for Beginners
If you've read my previous post, How to rank Number 1 on Search Engines, you'd have known that the core basics of search engine optimization is in fact to rank well on the search engines. I repeat this for the benefit of those who are beginners in this field and have not a clue on what search engine optimization is all about.
But for a little bit more indepth meaning to the term Search Engine Optimization, I'll quote from Wikipedia : Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.
As a marketing strategy for increasing a site's relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for..
That should be more than enough information to get your minds running about what Search Engine Optimization is all about.
Truth about Search Engine Optimization
There is ONE truth about Search Engine Optimization that I feel that EVERYONE, beginners and experts included should know about and that is basically :
Search Engine Optimization is all about theories. There is no right, there is no wrong.
That's right. Any information on SEO are basically tried theories of webmasters and the like regarding ranking well on search on engines. NO search engines in the world release their algorigthm that makes up the very essence of their engine. Why? Because there are ALWAYS bad eggs among the webmasters/users that always wish to leverage whatever they can for what money they can squeeze out of. That is a very important fact to remember because at the end of the day, you'd realise that only YOU will know what works and what does not for your site. Only YOU can test what is going to work and what is going to fail.
Dont get me wrong, you can read all the information in the world regarding Search Engine Optimization, but if you're not going to test out what works and what does not, you're as good as a grandmother learning to switch on the comp.
No one is 100% right but from their trials and tests, they conclude certain theories that do work so learn to filter the sure-fire methods from the not. I'll still list them in this blog nonehtheless.
Summary of this post
Search Engine Optimization is all about theories of people who have tried and tested methods and conclude what works and what does not. Not all information regarding Search Engine Optimization is right, while not all are wrong. Learn to filter what works and what doesnt by trying out Search Engine Optimization for yourself.
